Papua New Guinea 2024 LLG Elections: New Schedule and Changes

The Papua New Guinea Department of Provincial and Local Level Government Affairs (DPLGA) has announced the election schedule and significant changes for the 2024 Local Level Government (LLG) elections.

The election will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2024, with the following important dates:

  • Issue of Writs: Thursday, June 27, 2024, at 4 pm.
  • Nominations Close: Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at 4 pm.
  • Polling starts: Saturday, August 27, 2024.
  • Polling ends: Friday, September 6, 2024.
  • Return of Writs: On or before Thursday, September 27, 2024.

The DPLGA has also announced the following significant changes to the LLG election process:

  • Direct election of LLG Presidents: The LLG Presidents will be directly elected by the people.
  • Removal of the ‘vote of no confidence’ process: LLG Presidents will no longer be removed from power through a ‘vote of no confidence’.
  • Changes to the election schedule: LLG elections will now be held 18 months after the National Elections, instead of at the same time.

These changes are designed to make LLG elections more transparent and accountable, and to give the people more power in choosing their local leaders.
