Acatech Aviation College: PNG’s First Flight School Approved by CASA.

In a significant development for Papua New Guinea’s aviation sector, the Civil Aviation and Safety Authority of PNG (CASA PNG) has recognized and approved the country’s first in-country flight training organization. The Acatech Aviation College will now be able to offer a commercial pilot with instrument rating course, making it the first institution in the country to do so.

The announcement was made by Acatech Aviation College President Jonathan Palma in Port Moresby, who emphasized the significance of the occasion for the country’s aviation sector. He noted that many grade 12 school leavers in PNG have shown interest in piloting courses but have had to travel overseas to acquire the necessary training. The establishment of the Acatech Aviation College will provide a much-needed option for those interested in pursuing a career in aviation.

Palma added that safety is of paramount importance to the college, and that students will be well-familiarized with PNG airspace, terrains, and airstrips. He highlighted the advantage of having a flight school in Papua New Guinea, stating that students will have the confidence to fly in their own airspace, which is different from other countries.

The Acatech Aviation College has already begun training its first batch of 10 students, who will undergo the commercial pilot with instrument rating course. Once qualified, graduates will have the opportunity to work with the college as a flight instructor or a junior charter pilot for the soon-to-be-opened charter company. Palma also noted that the college’s instructors are highly trained and qualified, with over 2,000 instructing hours and the current PNG commercial pilot license.

The establishment of the Acatech Aviation College has been recognized by the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (DHERST) and will be included in the PNG DHERST program commencing next year.

The recognition and approval of the Acatech Aviation College by CASA PNG is a significant milestone for the country’s aviation sector. It provides a much-needed option for those interested in pursuing a career in aviation and will help to improve the overall quality and safety of the country’s aviation industry.
